GEO Gathering for Central Europe GEOS

On the weekend of October 11-14, the Central Europe GEO team (Sarah Berta-Somogyi, Győr, Hungary; AJ Davis, Košice, Slovakia; Melissa Karges, Sopron, Hungary; & Margaret Lewis, Třinec, Czech Republic) will be joined by GEO Missionary and DCE Intern, Kendra McNatt, (Frankfurt, Germany); Eurasia Communications, Rick Steenbock (Frankfurt); and Rev David and Lois Mahsman (Berlin) at a GEO Gathering event hosted in Košice, Slovakia by David Fiala, Project Coordinator—Central Europe. Central European GEO Gatherings are events that are hosted by the field twice annually, typically fall and spring, where the deployed GEO missionaries gather for worship, fellowship, devotion, prayer, continuing education, rejuvenation, camaraderie, encouragement, fun and reflection.

Rev. David Mahsman will be officiating an English language worship service for the team. Event participants will deliver short presentations regarding their service locations and ministry to their peers. Fiala will present some of the findings of his MA thesis research on LCMS authorized explanation texts of Luther’s Small Catechism. Steenbock will discuss Eurasia communications best practices.

(GEO Missionary Ryan Volkman, Třanovice, Czech Republic, will not be in attendance as he and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child any moment now!)

Theological Education in Russia

Missionary Rev. Matthew Heise will be teaching “Introduction to the New Testament” for the first-year class of five students at the Theological Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia. In total, there are four classes and 21 full-time students for the B.Div. courses in Koltushi, a village about 10 kilometers from St. Petersburg. Due to translations made by the Lutheran Heritage Foundation, Rev. Heise is able to use the classic book by F.F. Bruce “The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?”, plus Martin Frantzmann’s “The Word of the Lord Grows.” He also uses his own notes for the lectures. The class will be taught in accelerated fashion during the month of October. Rev. Heise is fluent in Russian.

Prayers for the Muhly Family

Rev. Jon Muhly and his wife, Julie, are expecting their fifth child in early October. Please keep the Muhly Family in your prayers: Please pray for a safe delivery for mother and child, pray that their return to Poland would be safe and uneventful, pray for the transition for the whole family, and pray for Rev. Muhly as he continues his work while also awaiting the birth of his child.

  • Please pray for the ELCIR as they meet together in the Synod.
  • Give thanks for the new ELCIR hymnal.
  • Pray for safe travel to and from Russia for Dr. Ahlman and Rev. Heise.
  • Pray for David Fiala, and the Central Europe GEOs as they gather for the retreat.
  • Pray for Rev. Heise and his students that the class would be fruitful in preparing future pastors to preach the Gospel.
  • Pray for the Muhly family, Volkman family, and for all expectant mothers, that their pregnancies, labors, and deliveries would be safe and healthy!
