Hope Counseling Center

Deaconess Maria Popova serves a congregation in Saransk, Russia. As part of her ministry, she provides information to women about pregnancy and alternatives to abortion.

In the January/February 2012 issue of Sharing, a newsletter put out about the mercy work of the LCMS, the Hope Counseling Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, is featured. The Hope Counseling Center is operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia (ELCIR), in conjunction with grants from the LCMS. Read an excerpt:

In the spiritual vacuum left by the fall of communism, many Russian people struggle with divorce, substance abuse, unexpected pregnancies and the long-term effects of previous abortions, loneliness and intolerance. For families, and especially women, who are shouldering these burdens, the Hope Counseling Center in St. Petersburg is a beacon of grace-filled light and hope.

Maria, I thank you for the work you are doing in Russia for God and the Lutheran Church. My wife and son are from Russia and I spend a lot of time there each year and will actually probably retire to Saratov Russia in the future.

May God continue to bless you and all that you do!
