Rick Steenbock, Projects and Communications Manager for Eurasia, is traveling in Africa for three weeks. Here is a brief report from Rick with a video with highlights of a Good Friday service in Botswana.

I am in Botswana with Rev. Roger Zieger, Lutherische Kirchen Mission (LKM — Lutheran Church Mission) Director and Rev. Christoph Weber, LKM missionary and area representative living in Durban, South Africa. The LKM is the mission arm of our partner church in Germanz, the Selbständige Evangelisch—Lutherische Kirch (SELK). We are visiting the missionaries of the SELK in Botswana.  We arrived in Botswana on Good Friday afternoon. We immediately drove to the village of Sedibeng to be part of their Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday celebrations.

The Good Friday service had already begun when we arrived in the late afternoon. We arrived to the sound of singing coming from a large white tent in the middle of a field. All the pastors from the Lutheran Church in Botswana were present to take part in the weekends activities. The service was centered around the seven last words of Christ as He hung on the cross. For each word, one of the pastors gave a brief homily and study of the Gospel text of Luke. Between each homily, there was singing and prayer. Pastor Phenyo Mokgaimena gave a message that talked about the journey from the Mount of Transfiguration to Mount Golgotha where Jesus died. The service did not end until 9 pm, after nearly five hours!

Most of the group will camp all weekend at that location. Saturday’s schedule began with a devotion and Bible study this morning. This afternoon they will go out to the nearby villages to do outreach and service projects. This evening they will hold worship again followed by continuous prayer throughout the night culminating in their Easter service Sunday morning.

  • Pray for Rick and the members of the LKM traveling through South Africa.
  • Pray for the people of Botswana, the missionaries and pastors there, and that their Easter celebrations would be blessed.
