On Sunday, December 8, 2013, Deaconess Elizabeth Ahlman was Commissioned and Installed as a deaconess in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) during Gottesdienst (Divine Service) at St. Trinitatisgemeinde, Leipzig, Germany. Rev. Tony R. Booker, Interim Regional Director for Eurasia, officiated at the Commissioning and Installation, along with St. Trinitatisgemeinde pastor Rev. Markus Fischer. The Commissioning Rite took place in both English and German! American, German, and Iranian friends alike were in attendance to celebrate Elizabeth’s commissioning as well as the Second Sunday of Advent, a traditional festival Sunday for the congregation.

Immediately following the service, Rev. Dr. Brent Smith, former Regional Director for Eurasia, pinned Elizabeth with the cross pin from the Concordia Deaconess Conference (CDC), the professional organization for LCMS Deaconesses. This traditionally takes place following the Divine Service but before the congregation leaves. Dr. Smith spoke about Christ’s coming to us, His dying on the cross for us, and that when we bear the cross in our vocations, Christ bears it with us.

Deaconess Elizabeth will be serving the Eurasia Region as a Communication Specialist. As such she will write and edit for the Eurasia Blog, cover events, work with fellow missionaries on editing their newsletters, and offer communications related assistance to our missionaries and partner churches when needed. The position is part-time, but is a Career Missionary, Network Supported position.

This call is the culmination of Deaconess Elizabeth’s training and years of waiting for the right call as a Deaconess. Deaconess Elizabeth graduated from the University of Iowa in 2005 with a B.A. in English Literature with an Emphasis on Creative Writing and a minor in History. She then attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis where she earned a Master of Arts in Theology (major: Exegetical theology, minor: Systematics) in 2007. From 2007-2008, Elizabeth served her deaconess internship at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkhart, IN. She received her deaconess certification in 2008, but chose to stay at home with her son, Thomas, born in April 2008.

Elizabeth is married to Rev. Dr. Christopher S. Ahlman, Strategic Mission Developer and Area Music Program Coordinator for LCMS Eurasia. They have two sons, Thomas (5.5) and Matthias (10 months). Elizabeth gives thanks to God for this call, which allows her to serve the Church as a deaconess, help her fellow missionaries in some small way by communicating the wonderful things that God is doing in Eurasia, proclaim the Gospel through writing, and still put her vocations as wife and mother first. Below you can see a video of Elizabeth’s Commissioning made by Communications and Project Coordinator, Rick Steenbock.

Did you get your gold cross before the service?

  6. Jennifer Griffith says:

Did you get the Gold Patch before the service with enough time to sew it on????

  7. elizabethahlman says:

Jennifer, you can order it from the CDC once you know for sure that you are being commissioned. As soon as the whole call process is finalized (which I think yours is). Send your application to Deaconess Heidi in Membership. They should send you the insignia well in advance. I sewed mine on the week before.
