Upcoming Events and Prayer Requests for March 2016

March-April 2016, Study Abroad Group from the Concordia University System to Stay at the Old Latin School in Wittenberg: A group of study abroad students will stay at the Old Latin School for six weeks as they study. The group is made up of students from Concordia University Texas, Concordia University Nebraska, Concordia University Portland, and Concordia University St. Paul. The group is led by Professor Renate Mayrhofer of Concordia University St. Paul, MN. They will arrive on Sunday, February 28 in Wittenberg.

  • Add the students to the Prayers of the Church for the next 6 weeks.
  • Pray for the students as they study, that they would learn and grow in their subject, as well as in the faith.
  • Pray for the study abroad opportunity to be an opportunity to learn more about other cultures.
  • Pray that the students’ faith would be a witness to the Wittenberg community.

March 3-6, 2016, Central European Christian Youth Gathering: Globally Engaged in Outreach (GEO) Missionaries from Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will bring their students together for a gathering with the theme “Stories.” Rev. Rex and Linda Rinne will join the group to help with leading sessions. The theme verse is 2 Corinthians 3:3: “And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (ESV). GEO missionaries Sarah Berta-Somogyi, Denise Schlesselman, Benjamin Helge, Gabriel Fickenscher and Sean Baker will bring students to the event and help to lead it.

  • Pray that Christian students would be strengthened and others would hear the Gospel and desire to know more.
  • Learn more about past gatherings.

March 16-17, 2016, Members from St. Trinitatisgemeinde, LCMS Personnel to Take Part at LKM Missionscollegium: 

Eurasia Regional Director Rev. James Krikava and Business Manager Richard Sovitzky, as well as Rev. Hugo Gevers and two members of St. Trinitatisgemeinde (one Iranian and one German) will be attending the Lutherische Kirchen Mission’s (LKM — Lutheran Church Mission) Missionscollegium. LKM is the mission arm of partner church body The Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (SELK). This is a time for missionaries from SELK, congregational members, pastors and others to discuss the work of mission that the SELK carries out in Germany and abroad, such as in South Africa. This time of discussion is especially important with regard to the refugee crisis.

  • Pray for missionaries, supporters and the board that the meetings would be fruitful.
  • Pray for the work of LKM throughout the world, that the Gospel would go forth.

March 17, 2016, 7:30 PM Die Bruecke Hosts a Discussion Concerning At-Risk Children: As a part of the official activities during the week when Leipzig hosts its international Book Fair, Die Bruecke, the outreach center for at-risk children and migrants run by Lutheran Church Mission (LKM) of partner church body The Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (SELK), will host a discussion concerning working with and caring for at risk children. The talk, entitled “Capable for Life”, will be led by Psychologist Dr. Moritz Nestor and Remedial Pedagogue Wolfgang von Biezen. Attendees will be encouraged to consider how to support and help children and teens caught in the middle against the backdrop of both the refugee crisis and the widening gap between rich and poor, or any other conflicts which may surround them.

  • Add this event to the Prayers of the Church for Sunday, March 13, 2016.
  • Pray that many people from Leipzig will attend this event and become aware of the work of the Church through Die Bruecke.
  • Pray for children and youth who are hurting and without support.
  • Pray for the work of Rev. Hugo Gevers (SELK) and his team of volunteers.
  • Pray that people who attend the talk and the children and migrants who attend Die Bruecke would also hear the Gospel and be brought into the folds of the Church.

Easter Monday, March 28, 2016, One Year Anniversary Celebrating St. Trinitatisgemeinde’s Move into Lukaskirche, Leipzig: The congregation of St. Trinitatisgemeinde (Holy Trinity Church) in Leipzig, Germany will host neighboring congregations for a special worship service on Easter Monday at 2:00 PM celebrating one year of work in their new building, Lukaskirche (St. Luke’s Church) in the Volkmarsdorf District of Leipzig, Germany. The congregation is a member of the LCMS’ German partner church. Missionary Rev. Dr. Christopher S. Ahlman works with the congregation to reach out to the unchurched of Leipzig, both native Germans and refugees.

  • Pray for the congregation as they continue to reach out to the community around them.
  • Pray for the repairs needed to the historic church building, that they would be wisely undertaken and that the Lord would provide the needed funds.
  • Learn more about when the congregation moved into the building.
  • Learn more about the congregation.
