The Lutheran Church Concordia (LCC), the church body with whom the LCMS works in Kyrgyzstan, recently shared this ministry update:
As part of its overall ministry, the LCC hosts Sunday Schools in five villages. In these five villages, 111 children attend Sunday Schools. The Business Office in Kyrgyzstan provides the Sunday Schools with teachers, supplies, and training for new teachers. One of the workers from the Business Office, Irina, helps to teach the classes in the Bishkek Church and helps the leaders in several of the other four villages. Each month, the Sunday Schools receive all necessary supplies including CDs, color paper, class plans, and more.
Irina also worked with the children in one village to make cards for their mothers. March 8th is Women’s Day in Kyrgyzstan, so during Sunday School on the 4th, the children practiced songs, read stories, and then made cards for their mothers. On the 8th, the children of the church in Bishkek put on a concert for their mothers and other members of the congregation. They sang songs, recited poetry and did skits. The congregation appreciated the program very much.
Also at the Bishkek church, Irina teaches three classes with a total of 30 children English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL). This is a wonderful way to serve not only the children of the parish, but also of the community. English language learning is seen as important, and so it draws in others from the community.
Two new ESL groups were also started in January 2014 in another village. Each of the groups has 10 children, and Irina teaches there twice a week. The children in the group include some Muslim children.
Through these simple means, the workers in Kyrgyzstan are able to build relationships and show these children and their families that they are loved. Through the building of relationships and the opportunities given by the activities, the Gospel is proclaimed to many children, and to their families as well!
- Please pray for the children of the Sunday School and ESL classes that they would be called to faith by the Holy Spirit, and that their parents and families would also be brought to faith.
- Pray for the workers in Kyrgyzstan, that they would be safe and would be able to continue in their work.
- Pray for the LCC as they continue to develop as a church body, that they would be strengthened in their confession of faith.
