Sharing Christ in a Communist Cafe

This post is shared by Rick Steenbock, Communications and Special Projects Manager for the Eurasia Region. Recently, we posted about the GEO Gathering in Kosice, Slovakia. This blog post is about an opportunity that Rick, GEO A.J. Davis, and GEO Kendra McNatt had to proclaim the Gospel to a stranger in a cafe as they toured Kosice.

Before the fall of communism across Europe in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s, it seemed very unlikely that I would ever get to visit that part of the world, let alone have an opportunity to openly share Christ with the people living in the region. But God opens doors! On a recent visit to Kosice, Slovakia, for a Globally Engaged in Outreach (GEO) gathering, myself along with GEOs A.J. Davis and Kendra McNatt, were able to do just that. A.J. Davis is a teacher living and serving in Kosice.  Kendra McNatt is a DCE intern serving Trinity Lutheran International Church in Frankfurt, Germany.

A.J. asked if we might be interested in stopping in a café that still today is bound to the communist era. While we were enjoying the experience of seeing this place, A.J., a Slovak speaker, felt the man at the next table was having a bad day and proceeded to engage him in conversation. Before we knew it, we were all sitting with the man, listening to his stories of being a soldier for 30 years during the communist regime. We talked about our faith in Christ and how he too could receive salvation.

A.J. Davis greets the man and asks if they can do anything for him.

Kendra asked if we could pray with him. As we prayed that God would watch over him and that the Holy Spirit would strengthen his faith, he began to weep and wipe his eyes. The effect of a simple prayer in the name of Christ is so powerful.

We may never get to see this gentleman again, although I hope that A.J. has an opportunity to stay connected with him. One never knows when and where God will open a door to witness. All we can do is be ready to step through  that door when it opens. Thank God for the privilege of being His witness on earth and pray that He continues to open doors in Eurasia and around the world.

A.J., Kendra, and Rick hope that A.J. can reconnect with this man, as AJ. currently lives and serves in Kosice, where this encounter took place.

  • Pray for this man to be strengthened and renewed in faith.
  • Pray that A.J. may have further opportunities to proclaim the Gospel to this man.
  • Pray for Kendra, A.J., and Rick as they continue their areas of service.
