This post is shared by Globally Engaged in Outreach (GEO) missionaries Sarah Berta-Somogyi and Melissa Karges. Sarah serves in Győr, Hungary by teaching English at a Lutheran high school there. Melissa teaches English at a Lutheran high school in Sopron, Hungary. In the past, Sarah and Melissa have created several events similar to this one in which their students can meet each other and see that there are other teens like them who believe in Jesus Christ. It also gives them opportunities to reach out to their friends. They have an upcoming weekend retreat planned for their students this month, so stayed tuned for more news from Sarah and Melissa!
This past October (2013) Sarah Berta-Somogyi and Melissa Karges organized their first game night of the year, which was held in Győr, Hungary. They invited students from both of the schools where they teach to attend, and had 21 attendees! Last year, Melissa and Sarah found that such events were wonderful ways to get to know their students better outside of the classroom. The two GEO teachers encouraged those who normally attend events they organize to bring friends to the game night. It’s usually a night of board games, some big games everyone can play together, discussion, food, and fun. In this way, Sarah and Melissa were able to meet and talk to some different students that they don’t usually interact with as much. Although the night is not set up as a Bible study event, many times God opens doors for Melissa and Sarah to speak to some students about what they believe, and they rejoice in these opportunities!
Melissa and Sarah also rejoice because some of those new attendees have also committed to attending their November retreat, where there will be many opportunities to continue discussions and study the Bible together.
- Pray for those who attended Game Night, that the conversation and Christian love shown there might strengthen those who believe and plant the seeds of faith in others.
