At the end of 2013, Rev. Alexander Furs, pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church (ELCIR) in Saratov, Russia, spoke at a conference of philosophy students and professors at the Chernyshevsky State University in Saratov. Extending the greetings of ELCIR Bishop Right Reverend Arri Kugappi and ELCIR Volga District President Rev. Olav Panchu, Rev. Furs presented for the audience of around 50 people on the history of the Church of Ingria and shared about the church’s partnership with the scholarly community of Saratov and its region.

Also, Rev. Furs reached out with the presentation of the Gospel to around 50 students and teachers at a high school in Saratov where he taught a lesson on the history of Protestantism at the invitation of the school’s deputy principal. The lesson was followed by a one-hour-long Q&A session.

On December 6, 2013, ELCIR Bishop’s Vicar Rev. Olav Panchu and Rev. Alexander Furs participated in the opening and plenary meeting of the Pimenos Lectures, representing the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria. Pimenos Lectures is an annual conference gathering ordained and lay servants of the region’s traditional faiths and people of secular science and culture for engaging in dialog and finding points of contact. This annual conference (eleventh in 2013) is named after the Most Reverend Pimenos (Khmelevsky), d. 1993, former Archbishop of Saratov and Volsk, who played a notable role in the dialog of Christianity and the intelligentsia in the Soviet era. The event was held at the Saratov State University that St. John’s Lutheran Church, and Rev. Furs in particular, has been partnering with in their outreach activities.

  • Please pray for Rev. Furs and Rev. Panchu, that they would be strengthened for continuing service.
  • Pray that those who attended these events would continue to hear the true Gospel!
