This report comes from Deacon Vyacheslav Shadrin, who serves The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria (ELCIR) in Minusinsk in Southern Siberia, Russia. The ELCIR is a partner church body of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), and the LCMS supports projects with this partner church body.
A large portion of Deacon Shadrin’s duties include working with youth and children, or overseeing a activities offered for them. Using creative forms of parish education (such as outdoor sports), as well as regular catechization and other traditional forms, Deacon Shadrin proclaims the Gospel to youth and children. The following are some recent activities from Deacon Shadrin’s work with youth.
From December through April, Deacon Shadrin of the Transfiguration Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Minusinsk continued to take regular trips to the village of Karatuzskoye 100 km from Minusinsk to further the outreach ministry together with Pastor Vitaly Luchagov. They met with people and took steps to enhance outreach to young people and to the remnants of the German and other ethnic diasporas.
Since the beginning of 2015, the Transfiguration Lutheran Church has been conducting a catechization class for teenagers. Please pray that it bears fruit!
On March 26-27, during a school break, Deacon Shadrin led a two-day Bible camp on the Gospel of Mark with a total attendance of 11. Church member Edvard Ivashchenko, a student of the children and youth workers’ course at the ELCIR Theological Institute, has recently led a Bible study on a topic from the Book of Revelation assigned by the Institute. Please pray that Edvard completes his seminary studies successfully in November.
Please pray that a team from Minusinsk led by their deacon gets a chance to travel to Omsk or even Koltushi to participate in a confirmation camp. Currently, there are two teenage confirmands at Transfiguration Lutheran. One is Deacon Shadrin’s son Fyodor. The other is Alexander Ostanin, a 14-year-old who has been active in the church life for a year and a half. In January, Deacon Shadrin took Alexander on a hike to the mountain Borus on the West Sayan Ridge with an overnight stop. In May, Deacon Shadrin, Alexander, and Edvard went on a cycling ride.
Vyacheslav continues to lead youth evenings on Thursdays. Praise God there is now a “backbone” of two or three young Christians at those gatherings who proclaim the Gospel themselves to their peers.
Vyacheslav and his church continue to pray about organizing a scout troop and bringing more students to the Sunday school. There will be a scout camp in July where Deacon Shadrin will again be responsible for rafting and Bible studies. Recently, 3 teenage boys have joined the scouting activities—Sasha, Lyosha, and Vova (Alexander, Alexey and Vladimir). Please keep Vova in your special prayers as this 14-year-old is developing a substance dependence. Lyosha has been attending the youth evenings and even the catechization meetings while Sasha is still apprehensive, but seems to be fascinated with the climbing training wall and with Christian fellowship in general.
The Sunday school teacher Elena who joined the church leaders’ team earlier this year continues to lead a class for children during the worship. Please pray that the Sunday school grows. Elena organized a theater play on Christmas. Please keep her in your prayers.
