This report comes from LCMS partner church body, The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia. The LCMS supports projects with this partner church body. In this update, the congregation of Nizhny Novgorod shares about some of their special events during the month of August. The report was translated by Mr. Aleksei Zubtsov.
On Sunday, 14 August 2016, the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Nizhny Novgorod hosted Les Chants Mystiques Organ and Vocal Music Concert. The program included works by Flor Peeters (1903-1986), Emmanuel Rhené-Baton (1879-1940), Ivan Tatarinov (b. 1992), and Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). The music pieces were performed by international contest winner Ivan Tatarinov (organ, piano) and Tatyana Tatarinova (vocal), assistant professor, international contest winner, candidate of history of arts. Ivan Tatarinov who had prepared Russian translations of the texts, served as the compère of the concert and shared about the spiritual content of the music pieces.
On 25 August 2016, Rev. Yaroslav Boychenko led a meeting, the first in a series, devoted to the spiritual music of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971). Rev. Boychenko and his group discussed the various aspects of the musical genius of Stravinsky and deliberated on the religious motifs in his music. Pastor Yaroslav played back the records of several pieces by Stravinsky. For many of the participants it was the first time they heard the composer’s music.
The congregation at Nizhny Novgorod makes frequent use of sacred music concerts and recitals in order to engage the surrounding community and share the Gospel with them. This frequently draws unchurched people who become interested in the Lutheran faith.
