It’s often when we say “I can’t” that God says “You can, through my mercy.”

Two years ago, Pastor Széll Bulcsú’s congregation, The Lutheran Church of Kispest in Kispest, Hungary, hosted an English Bible camp in partnership with short term teams through LCMS World Mission. This year, the congregation hosted the camp again with 32 children attending the 4 day camp in June.

Sarah Berta-Somogyi, a GEO missionary in Gyor, Hungary, has helped organize the camp both years. She says, “Pastor Bulcsú and his congregation used to think that they were too small to organize anything like this camp, but now they are determined to hold camp every summer. Praise the Lord!”

This year’s camp theme was “God helps us when we’re sad.” Each day, the kids learned a story from the Bible ranging from the story of Ruth to the story of Matthew, sang English and Hungarian Bible songs, had craft-time and game-time, and talked and played with Sarah and Stephanie Magee, another GEO missionary based in Czech Republic.

Sarah’s experience with both camps led to the opportunity to meet with kids she had first met two years ago. She says, “ I got to see how they’ve grown older but also
grown in their relationships with Jesus. They were some of the first to offer comments and answer questions that were being asked.  It wasn’t just a story, it is truth and plays an important part in their lives.”

She sees the success of the camp as 32 children getting to hear the clear message of Jesus Christ: His death and resurrection for their redemption. One father said to her: “I don’t know what you guys do, but my son couldn’t wait to come the second day.  You’ve really made a difference.” The church and Sarah pray for the future of the camps, that more local (and likely, non-believing) children will participate in the years to come.

Stephanie’s experience at the camp was beneficial. She participated with partner organizations and short term teams to hold camps in the Czech Republic and Slovakia as well.
