Andrew Ferry was post-graduation and working on his basketball career when he was lead to apply through the Office of International Mission for a short-term mission opportunity. Within two weeks, he went from applying to flying to Tisovec, Slovakia to be a new teacher at the Evangelical Lutheran High School (EGT).
He shares, “in my spare summer time, I embarked on several Athletes in Action tours, including two to China. They helped greatly prepare me for this experience now!
“Through my experiences with Athletes in Action and a few mission trips to Mexico, I came to realize just how big and vast a world God created and how many people are in need of the good news that Jesus is our Savior.
“I am very much looking forward to forming relationships with the students and community in Tisovec. There is such a great opportunity here to invest and share with hundreds of students in just a few short months. Beyond that, I am excited to learn about a new culture and experience and see things and places that many people may not have the chance to do.
“I never imagined I would become a teacher, but God had other plans for me! Through my interactions in the classroom with students, I hope to be able to form relationships and get to know them personally. Just by being open and relating to them, I think will open the door for the gospel to be discussed. Outside the classroom, I will be involved with extracurricular activities such as English Club or Sports Clubs which lead to more bonding. Living my faith in the classroom and outside is a great way for the students and community to see how God is working and living in me, and I hope to let that message shine through me in all the many settings I will encounter during my time here.”
