Career Missionary Benjamin Helge and a few of his students share with us about their recent summer retreat. Ben works with youth and young adults in an English Talk Group associated with a church plant in Havirov-Sumbark, Czech Republic. The group often participates in special retreats to study the Scriptures more in depth, in addition to their weekly meetings.

“[Jesus] said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” John 8:12, (NIV).
What or who is guiding you through this life? As a Christian, I know that Jesus Christ is my guide and my light as He is the light of the whole world. This theme of light guided my most recent English retreat. Traveling yet again to the Beskydy Mountains, 22 individuals joined our fourth víkendovka (short retreat) at Chata Boszczyk with English Talk Group (ETG). Some visiting Americans shared stories and devotionals relating to our topic of “Light Up Your Life.” We also enjoyed forest adventures and games relating to light.
Of course, I could always tell you exactly what we did, but rather, I asked a few students to share about the retreat and their reactions.
Víkendovka was great! We had new Americans there that I didn’t know before. They are really nice people. I really liked hanging out with them. I learned many things about USA from them. They shared their stories with us. They were really interesting. I enjoyed them.
During whole Víkendovka we played many games. I liked them all. There was everything: board games, outside games, inside games, night games. Just everything. Everything was in English, so we practiced English. We sang songs, too. We had a busy program, so there wasn’t much free time and I really liked it, because it would be boring. But it wasn’t.
On Saturday we also were on a hike to the mountain called Javorový vrch. It was very entertaining. There is an amazing view on the top. You, who read it and have never been there, must see it! We took some pics and had a Kofola (Czech cola) in a restaurant there.
We had a good accommodation, good food, and good people.
I think it lit my life up there and I had a great time. I hope I will meet those Americans again. And I am looking forward to next Víkendovka. – Dennis
Víkendovka was an awesome start to my holiday. We played all kinds of games to get to know each other a little more. We had a bonfire, where we sang songs and shared our stories. In the free time we’d go out and just talk. But my most favorite part was probably our hike, because even though we were climbing a mountain, we all had fun and talked about everything that came to our minds. Not only that I’ve been in the mountains with my friends, I also had the chance to hear stories from Americans, who joined us for the weekend, about how God has helped them overcome the hard times in their lives. I learned that even though something might seem impossible to deal with, you can handle it and become a better and stronger person with the help of God. – Nikola
Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Through His death and resurrection, we have the assurance that no matter what happens in this life, when we believe in Him, the promise of eternal life is ours.
God always brings those students that should be at every event. Five students in attendance, unbelievers or unchurched, have now been connected to our church plant and Sunday morning activities. Praise God for His working and the Light He continues to shine in this community.
