During May and June 2013, as Rev. Yaroslav Boychenko, the pastor of the ELCIR Lutheran congregation in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, continued to use his connections in the city’s musical community, his congregation hosted two more outreach concerts of sacred and secular music in his church. On May 19, Olga Shumitskaya, a student at the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory, performed organ compositions by Nicolaus Bruhns, J. S. Bach, and August Gottfried Ritter. At the concert on June 16, international and Russian music contest awardees Ivan Tatarinov (organ) and Nikolay Kustov (bassoon) performed 12 organ, bassoon, and piano works. The program included, among others, such renowned composers as Vincent Lübeck, J. S. Bach, Gioacchino Rossini, and Louis Vierne, as well as Nizhny Novgorod composers Vladimir Kholshchevnikov, Tatiana Tatarinova, and Ekaterina Suvorkina.
On May 25, 2013, the congregation hosted an ecumenical meeting of clergymen and lay leaders from different Christian denominations. The topic of the meeting was “The mission of the Church today. How do we proclaim the Gospel today?” The meeting gathered Orthodox Christians from Moscow, and Lutheran (represented by Rev. Boychenko), Baptist and charismatic Christians from Nizhny Novgorod. The discussion was a positive experience of mutually respectful and thoughtful fellowship. Rev. Boychenko plans to host similar meetings in the future.
Praise God for the baptism of the child Bogdan Silin (b. 2010) and the confirmations of three adults—the couple Alexander and Alexandra Silin, and Ilya Gradov on May 26, 2013. The Sacrament of Baptism and the confirmations were administered by Rev. Boychenko.
On July 3, 2013, Rev. Boychenko celebrated the rite of marriage of the church members Sergei Tolochkov and Anna Kaprinina who are active in congregational youth ministry. Praise God and pray for His blessings on the new Lutheran couple!
